Stephen grew up in Putaruru before attending Radio NZ Announcer Training School in Wellington. He worked from 1984-1990 as a radio announcer in Taupo, Tokoroa, Greymouth, Wellington and Hamilton. He then successfully auditioned for a basketball anchoring spot on SKY Television’s sport channel, SKY Sport, from the station’s switch-on date May 1990. He was then promoted to fulltime solo Sports Anchor for SKY Sport and have happily been with the company ever since.
He has anchored basketball, rugby (including two rugby world cups), rugby league including commentating on the Toyota Cup/NRL, motorsport, athletics, equestrian, awards shows in studio and on location.
Stephen has also works on Winter Olympics coverage including calling the opening and closing ceremonies. He worked on 2010 Commonwealth games and 2012 Summer Olympics as commentator for opening and closing ceremonies and reporter.
He has a passion for sit down interviewing and has interviewed many people over more than 20 years. Taking a philosophy of less is more has always been a valuable tool. As well as sport, Stephen has an interest in politics and has an opinion and is willing to share it when it is warranted.
