Ric Charlesworth is a doctor of medicine and a former captain of the Australian Hockey Team, the Western Australian State Hockey Team and Cricket Team. He played hockey for Australia for a record 16 years. His coaching formula is part of the reason for the sustained success of the team at Atlanta and Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. For 8 consecutive years the team was ranked number one in the world. He won Australian Team Coach of the Year six times in 1994. In 2005 Ric was selected as Western Australia’s greatest ever hockey player and also Western Australia’s greatest ever coach. He was appointed as the High Performance Manager of New Zealand Cricket and took up that position in October

At the conclusion of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, Ric Charlesworth had coached the Australian Women’s Hockey Team, the Hockeyroos, for eight years and established himself as arguably Australia’s most successful sporting coach. The Sydney Olympic Hockey final against Argentina was officially Ric Charlesworth's final match with the Hockeyroos. His reign ended having coached them in 253 internationals with a record of 198 wins, 25 draws and 30 losses. This record includes the World Cup in 1994 and 1998 and Gold Medals at the Atlanta and Sydney Olympics and the Commonwealth Games in 1998.

As a coach Ric Charlesworth created the World domination of the Hockeyroos through meticulous planning and total dedication. His philosophy - Enjoy playing and training and you'll get your reward. Richard currently writes, talks and consults on sport and performance. For the past couple of years he has been a mentor coach to five national team coaches with the Australian Institute of Sports and a High Performance Consultant with the Fremantle Dockers Football Club for the past two years.

Ric is a doctor of medicine and a former captain of the Australian Hockey Team, the State Hockey Team and State Cricket Team. He was also a Federal Member of Parliament for 10 years. He retired from this position to take up coaching the Australian Women’s Hockey Team from 1993 until Sydney 2000.

Ric Charlesworth played 227 times for Australia between 1972 and 1988. He was selected for 5 Olympics (1980 Moscow boycott) and 4 World Cups. He won an Olympic silver medal in 1976 and World Cup gold in 1986. In the 1986 World Cup he was player of the World Cup tournament and also leading goal scorer. Between 1972 and 1980 he played 1st Class cricket for Western Australia, Captaining the team in 1979.

He has won Western Australian Sportsman of the Year 1976, 1979 and 1987, West Australian sports Champions of the Year Awards – Coach of the Year 1994 – 2000, Australian Coaching Council Team Coach of the Year 1994, 1996 – 2000, Confederation of Australian Sport Coach of the Year 1996, 1997 and 2000.

He was awarded an Order of Australia in 1987, won Western Australia Citizen of the Year Award 2001 and inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame in 1987.

In 2001, Richard wrote a book called “The Coach – Managing for Success”. This book offers fascinating ideas about coaching philosophies that can be applied outside the sporting arena to achieve success. The book has been reprinted three times. His latest book Staying at the Top was released in August last year and is selling steadily. In this book Richard talks about his five principles for being the best and how to stay there. Ric speaks extensively all over Australia and is considered to be amongst the very best of Australia’s Elite Coaches who speak. In late 2005 Ric was appointed to be the High Performance Manager for New Zealand Cricket until 2009 when he returned to Australia as National Coach of the Australian Mens Hockey Team
